History of the San Siro Stadium
The San Siro Stadium, built at the behest of Rossoneri president Piero Pirelli, was inaugurated on 19 September 1926 with a friendly match between Inter and Milan. The idea was to create a sports hub next to the existing hippodrome. Initially, the stadium had only four stands and could accommodate 35,000 spectators.
In the 1930s, ownership of the stadium passed to the City of Milan, which started extension works. The capacity was increased to 55,000 spectators. In the 1960s, the famous propeller-shaped ramps were added, increasing the capacity to 80,000 for safety reasons.
The Third Ring and the 1990 World Cup
For the 1990 World Cup, a third ring was added, bringing the stadium to its current form. Although commonly known as San Siro, the stadium is officially named after Giuseppe Meazza, a footballer who played for both Inter and AC Milan and was world champion with the Italian national team.
The San Siro Museum
