Instead of buying tickets, you can use your contactless debit or credit card to tap at the turnstiles. The system also works with Apple Pay, Android Pay, Samsung Pay, with NFC functionality.
Just place your card against the POS symbol found at the metro turnstiles, or on trams and buses. In the case of the metro, you must also put the same card down when you leave the metro.
Please note: you cannot pay tby card on Trenitalia and Trenord trains, with the only exception of the Malpensa Express.
Based on the number of journeys we make within 24 hours, the system will automatically charge the cheapest ticket for us.
If you really don’t want to use a card, or if you don’t have one for each passenger, you can buy different types of tickets that allow you to optimise your expenses and save a little, when possible.
ATM tickets can be bought at tobacconists in all Milan metro stations, at the many automatic machines in the stations, online via the Visit Milano app and the official ATM app called App ATM Milano.
ATM tickets allow you to travel on the ATM urban network and on the city sections of all interurban lines, on the Trenord urban network, including the Passante Ferroviario.
Each ticket is valid for a single access to the ATM urban network and must be validated at the entrance at the beginning of each journey and at each change of vehicle, respecting its time validity.
Since a few years now, validation must also be done at the exit, which is why you should always keep your ticket handy.
The transport fare system is based on concentric zones: the entire city of Milan is included in the Mi1 zone and requires a standard ticket. If you pay for your trip with a contactless card, the payment system will automatically calculate the fare for you. City tickets cost EUR 2.20 and are used for travel on the urban network, allow one access to the metro and have a total duration of 90 minutes. For city tickets you can take advantage of packages and promotions that allow you to save a little and are very useful for those who want to get around the city or have various business appointments.
- The Carnet 10 trips costs 19.50 euro and contains 10 individual tickets, each lasting 90 minutes. Please note: the same carnet cannot be used by more than one person;
- The day ticket costs EUR 7.60, and for 24 hours from the moment it is validated it allows an unlimited number of trips;
- The 3-day ticket costs EUR 15.50 and lasts 3 days from when it is validated. Please note, however: the start and end of the day is not calculated from midnight but from the start/end of the daily service. In other words: a day ends at 3:45 a.m., not at midnight. It is an unnecessary complication, we know, but it works like this
Intercity tickets are used for travel on the interurban network, i.e. to travel from Milan to hinterland towns or between municipalities in the interurban area served by the metro. Fares change according to the destination to be reached, the various areas are divided into zones and single ticket prices range from 1.60 to 4.20 euro, validity ranges from 60 to 165 minutes.
In order not to risk it, we advise you to use a contactless card.
To go to RhoFiera Milano you must use a ticket for the Mi3 band, departing from the Mi1 band.
Even to go to the Forum di Assago you need a Mi3 band ticket. The San Siro Stadium, on the other hand, is in the Mi1 bracket.
ATM has made the RicaricaMi card available to tourists and citizens alike. This is a rechargeable electronic card on which various types of tickets can be inserted at the same time: 2×6 weekly tickets, daily tickets, 10-trip carnets and ordinary tickets. The RicaricaMi card can be purchased at all ATM Points and authorised retailers, costs €2.50 and includes an ordinary ticket.
