Many tourists want to take a day trip (at least!) to Lake Como during their visit to Milan.

Unfortunately, as many videos on social media report, the trains connecting Milan and Como are often crowded. They are in fact local trains, designed for commuting workers, and do not always manage to accommodate tourists in the best possible way.

Como by train from Milan: cheap, but crowded
The train is definitely the cheapest option for getting from Milan to Como. Taking the train from Cadorna station, you can reach Como Nord Lago station in about an hour.
Tickets cost about €5.20 and trains run frequently, making this option very convenient.
If you want to save money and use public transportation, the best thing to do is book a train from Milano Centrale to Varenna, and then book a boat tour from there.
There are two major disadvantages to taking the train:
- overcrowding and a travel experience that does not always live up to expectations, especially on busy days;
- once you arrive in Como, you will have to organise yourself to visit the surroundings.

For those who like to drive, renting a car is a great option to reach Como from Milan. The journey from Milan to Como takes about an hour on the A9 motorway.
We recommend using a GPS or apps such as Google Maps or Waze. The signposting can be confusing for non-Italians and, above all, the road system in Como city is really complicated!
The main advantage of visiting Lake Como by car is freedom: you can explore and stop wherever you want, without waiting for public transport. Remember, however, that finding parking in some villages is not always easy, especially at weekends and in high season.
